October Pictures 2014

A report of a Lesser Black-backed Gull gave Dian and I a reason to travel to Penticton in October.  It took about 6 hours and an overnight stay but we found it on the shores of Okanagan Lake.  This was the first time we have ever seen one of these Eastern rarities.

Lesser Black-backed Gull
While looking for the LB Gull we found this dainty Bonaparte's Gull.  This is a young one.
Back at home a Coyote was waiting to cross the road.
If its legs weren't so dirty I might have printed this shot.
A trip to Reifel produced some Sandhill Crane pictures.
A few Northern Pintails were also at Reifel.  I thought I had a pretty good picture here but now see it hasn't developed its "pintail" yet.
These striking mushrooms were beside me when I was photographing the Cranes.  They are Fly Amanita.  From Wikipedia-"Amanita Muscaria is noted for its hallucinogenic properties.  The mushroom was used as an intoxicant by the peoples of Siberia, Eurasia, North America and Scandinavia".
It was powdered and put in milk to produce an insecticide to kill flys.  The flys drank the tainted milk.
My local pond had a pair of Otter.  It has been a while since the last time they visited.
Snow Geese are by the 1000's in Ladner.  This is a composite HDR shot of 7 different exposures.  There was a lot of movement in the geese and I didn't think I would get as much detail as I did.  This picture covers about 1/3 of the field.

Tropical Kingbirds are rare in this area.  This one was also in Ladner.
I posted this Anna's Hummingbird in the blog last month.  Here is a good chance to see how his gorget has grown out in 1 month.  I can see a couple of new feathers.

End of this blog.  Scroll down for previous blog.
