Birding Lower Rio Grande Valley April 2-4 2014

We heard of a Snowy Plover up the beach on S. Padre so we went for a look.  No luck there but we did find 3 other Plovers as seen below.  Lots of Franklin Gulls in the area and someone showed me a picture of a Magnificent Frigate Bird taken at the convention centre on Apr 2.  Bird count for the trip is at 187.

Wilson's Plover

Piping Plover.  We thought we had the Snowy here until we saw the yellow legs.  The Snowy has grey legs. (besides other things)

Semi-palmated Plover

Our first Least Tern of the trip.

Least Tern.  We are seeing them everywhere now.
Tropical or Couch's Kingbird.  It didn't sing so we don't know.
Skimmers skimming.

Savannah Sparrow.

Scissor-tailed Flycatchers kept me busy for 30 minutes

Scissor-tailed Flycatcher up close.

Just a beauty of a butterfly.  Anyone know the name? Got a couple of  replies and it is a Pipevine Swallowtail.  Thanks Dave and Joanne.
Green Kingfisher at Sabal Palms.

Brown-crested Flycatcher.  There were reports of Ash-throated and Great-crested also at the Convention Center.  The belly is pale yellow and the rufous on the underside of the tail went to the tip.  These characteristics led me to my conclusion.

A Summer Tanger turned up today at the Convention centre.

Buff-bellied Hummingbird at Sabal Palms.
Black-throated Green Warbler Sheepshead Rd Padre

Indigo Bunting Sheepshead Padre

Warbling Vireo Sheepshead Padre
A north wind blew in a few migrants today.  It was nice to see some new birds.
