Rio Grande Valley Texas April 10-13 2014

Winds from the south have carried the birds away from South Padre Island the last few days.  We have travelled out a bit to find what we can.  The highlight was the Snowy Plover which is a lifer for us.  Species list now at 205 and slowing down rapidly.
This Eastern Meadowlark shot gave me an opportunity to compare with a picture I took a few years ago in Kamloops British Columbia of a Western Meadowlark below.

The stripe behind the eye appears lighter here -the cheek appears to be very similar -both malars seem identical.  I guess I am going to have to get tail shots because I don't see how anyone can tell these apart in the field (unless these are both Westerns)

Black-chinned Hummingbird at Estero Llano SP

Two young Pauraques at Estero Llano.  I posted the mother sitting on the eggs a few weeks ago.  They sure grow fast

Fulvous Whistling Ducks.  A lifer we almost missed until someone told us they were right beside us as we sat on the balcony at Estero Llano SP

American Avocets at Birding Center S. Padre

We have 2 days left here before we leave for Portal Arizona.  The winds are still blowing from the south so we don't have high hopes for todays search for migrants.  May try for Parrots this evening in Brownsville.
