Panama Boquete Birds Mar. 23, 24, 25 2016. Pepper Shrike, Trogon, Spangled-cheeked Tanager, Squirrel Cuckoo, Golden-olive Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds

The last 3 days were spent at 4 different locations. Culebra Trail, Pipeline Trail, Lerida Finca, and the trail to Volcan Baru.  Bill Fox jointed us for 2 of the hikes.  One was a damp one up Culebra trail.  It was the only day we have seen a sort of rain here and that was more of a phenomenon  called Bajareque.  It is a heavy mist that rolls over the mountains from the Caribbean.

Spangled-cheeked Tanager Culebra Trail.  I would really like to get a good shot of this gorgeous bird.

This bird likes to run through the trees like a squirrel and act a little crazy.  It is a Squirrel Cuckoo and it landed right beside me for some reason.  Pipeline Trail Boquete.

Sometimes I just don't know what it is-maybe a Stripe-tailed Hummingbird.  One picture I took of it revealed white edges to the tail.

I am completing this blog at 4:30 AM Mar. 26.  We meet Jason Lara, a guide, who is taking us to a location called Willie Mazu at 6:30.  He assures us there are lots of birds there.  The next blog will reveal all.

Panama Boquete Birds Mar 20, 21, 22, 2016. Bat Falcon, Common Tody-flycatcher, Crimson-backed Tanager, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Lesser Greenlet, Palm Tanager

Our time here is narrowing down to a week remaining so we hired a guide. We were supposed to leave this morning to explore new locations.  However very strong winds came up overnight and we barely got any sleep.  We regretfully postponed our trip until Saturday.  The following pictures are some of the birds seen over the last 3 days with locations indicated.

There were literally 1000's of Swainsons Hawks kettling over our cottage March 20.

They are migrating north.

This is just a fraction of the migrating flock as they head north from Argentina on their 6000 mile flight.  It is one of the most spectacular sights I have seen.

Yellow-green Vireo. Rio Encontado.  Almost like a Red-eyed Vireo but lacks the more distinctive facial pattern of the Red-eyed Vireo.

Finally a Cicada.  They are about 2 inches long and make a heck of a racket.  You almost have to cover your ears if you are close, like this one was.  They spend about 13-17 years underground as nymphs only to emerge and make life miserable if you live close to them.

Panama Boquete Mar 18&19 2016. Rio Encantado, La India Trail, Pearl Kite, Fasciated Heron, Piratic Flycatcher, Masked Tityra

The following pictures were taken Mar 18 and 19. The first set is taken at Rio Encantado resort.  The owner let us bird the property after paying a $10 fee each.  It was bit pricey but it was an interesting morning if only to see the tree house and we found a few lifers.

Here is the approximate location of La India trail east of Boquete.

Yellow-throated Euphonia.  Day 18 we went on a hike with Bill and Lynne Fox on a trail called La India.  The following pictures are some of the birds seen there.

Sometimes it is impossible to get the shot you want such as this Lance-tailed Manakin.

Looks like an Acadian Flycatcher .

This bird had us excited.  It is a Masked Tityra. (pronounced Ti-tyra)

We thought this was an immature Laughing Falcon but is actually a rare (for this area) Pearl Kite.  It is regurgitating something.
